The original site of this case is a typical traditional Mulao courtyard, which is characterized by a low front and high back, and reflects a relatively conservative architectural style. As the building is surrounded by walls, indoor lighting is limited. Over the years, the ancient village has deteriorated further and fallen into disrepair after emigration of villagers. This ancient village, situated by the Wuyang River, has withstood the test of time for over 200 years since its establishment during the Daoguang period. It belongs to a significant component of the cruise ship landscape. Therefore, in the design process, the owner insisted on preserving the old and retaining the distinctive characteristics of the Mulao ancient village. In order to achieve this goal, a restoration design technique was employed during the renovation process to avoid excessive updates, so as to preserve the original appearance of the ancient village. The renovated architecture still retains the traditional features of white walls and black tiles, along with small bridges and flowing water, adding to the rustic and elegant atmosphere of this Mulao ethnic ancient village, and incorporating more open spaces. The rooms are named after Mulao ethnic festivals such as “Zou Po, Lao Geng, Zuoye Song, Yi Fan”. The design elements create a balance between softness and cleanliness, in which some exposed original-colored walls convey a restrained and elegant aesthetic. The geometric and compositional elements bring a neutral and pure spatial experience, enriched with delicate touches. The rusted metal panels and floor-to-ceiling glass windows are used, allowing for bright and transparent indoor and outdoor spaces and infusing the old village with a new vitality through modern design elements. The design successfully satisfies the requirement of maintaining a consistent overall style while showcasing the diversity of aesthetically independent spaces within the ancient village. In the construction process, the ancient village has managed to maintain its original greenery and woodland. While enhancing the aesthetic appeal of the buildings, this offers a refreshing outdoor environment for visitors to enjoy fresh air.
