Project Centre transformed Waterman’s Green into a vibrant, inclusive, accessible public space.

Positioned at the bustling southwest corner of Putney Bridge, along the River Thames, Waterman’s Green was previously an underused space with a narrow entrance, uneven footpaths and steep stairs. The area was difficult to access, particularly for those with disabilities or mobility challenges, and the limited entrance design further disconnected the park from the river, diminishing its potential as a valuable green space within the bustling city.

Recognising the transformative potential of this site, Project Centre revitalised Waterman’s Green with a clear focus on accessibility, inclusivity, and sustainability. By replacing the former stairs with a gentle, accessible ramp, we made the space welcoming to all. Our redesign also widened the entrance, creating open, sweeping views of the Thames and providing a warm, inviting pathway that encourages residents and visitors to explore and enjoy the park.

Central to the transformation was the creation of a rich natural environment. Project Centre introduced native trees and diverse greenery that significantly enhanced biodiversity, improved air quality, and provided thriving habitats for birds and insects. We further enriched the space with carefully placed seating and sustainable materials, creating an attractive and functional environment.

This revitalised urban oasis not only offers peace and shelter in the heart of the city but also strengthens the local community by encouraging social interaction and supporting local businesses. Waterman’s Green has become a model for how public spaces can integrate nature with urban living, promoting both ecological health and community well-being.

Community engagement was a key element in Project Centre's approach. We shaped our design through extensive consultations, surveys, and collaboration with residents and stakeholders. With an impressive 94% support from residents, Project Centre successfully rejuvenated Waterman’s Green, creating a more inclusive, sustainable, and vibrant public space that benefits both people and the environment.
