Nanyang Technological University’s (NTU) commitment to sustainability was recently recognized with the whole systems approach excellence award by the international sustainable campus network in May of 2023. On NTU’s smart campus, there are eight zero-energy buildings, the most number amongst organizations in Singapore. Our key design direction aims to be in alignment with NTU’s commitment to sustainability and support of the Singapore green plan. Hence, we embrace the concept of circular design to transform Canteen Hall 13 new into a outlook called Oasis Hall 13.
Circular design isn’t just sustainable; it’s cost-effective and future focused. It emphasizes principles of regeneration by reducing waste and maximizing resources. This approach supports spatial design longevity and reduces contribution to landfill. From using salvaged materials to integrating retrofitted designs helps to create a more sustainable industry.
We explore the possibilities of spaces that evolve to suit the changing needs of space users. Prioritizing elements that can be easily disassembled and moved. The design actively engages its users to question assumptions and embrace change to pave the way for fresh ideas and approaches.
Oasis Hall 13 aims to become a beacon of inspiration for NTU’s residents and students; a tranquil retreat from the hustle and bustle of campus life. This is a place where students and staff can unwind, refuel, and connect in an environment inspired by the calm and rejuvenating qualities of an oasis. Lush plants and trees are integral to the design. Hanging plants and potted greenery are strategically placed to created a sense of immersion in nature accompanied by a unique central feature to serve as a focal point and enhance the oasis feel.
