Totterdown Street, located just off the bustling Tooting High Street in one of the world’s "coolest neighbourhoods" as recognised by Lonely Planet in 2017, has long served a functional purpose, with on-street parking and delivery points supporting surrounding businesses. Despite Tooting’s multicultural vibrancy and dynamic “curry corridor,” this energy didn’t quite extend to Totterdown Street—until now.
Wandsworth Borough Council commissioned Project Centre to transform Totterdown Street into a vibrant community destination that embodies the lively character of Tooting. The project vision was to create a central public space where people could gather, socialise, and enjoy new green infrastructure and active travel options. A key aspect of the project was the collaboration with Tooting Market, extending its lively atmosphere onto the street and encouraging shared use of the space.
The project was fast-tracked, moving from Stage 2 to Stage 5 within a condensed timeline. Project Centre worked closely with local businesses and the community, ensuring the design reflected their needs through a detailed consultation process. The result is a thoughtfully designed public realm that celebrates Tooting’s energy while serving the functional needs of the area.
The Council is now piloting a 12-month temporary trial scheme to assess how the design functions in practice, with flexibility for adjustments. Data will be gathered through site visits, meetings, and resident feedback via the Common Place platform. Should the trial prove successful, a permanent design will follow, incorporating additional green infrastructure like trees and rain gardens to promote climate resilience and enhance the area’s appeal.
Brian Albuquerque, Local Growth Manager at Richmond and Wandsworth Councils, shared his appreciation for Project Centre’s design expertise, noting, "We now have a vibrant outdoor space for residents and visitors, with the added benefit of increased footfall and engagement for local businesses."
This project demonstrates a bold, community-focused approach to urban revitalisation, leveraging local partnerships and flexible design to create a sustainable, engaging public space for all.
