Despite over 40 million wheelchair users in China, they are rarely seen in public spaces due to the lack of accessibility infrastructures, which restricts their independence and mobility, confining them to their homes. "WheelVenture" is a gamified virtual reality (VR) experience that raises awareness about the challenges faced by wheelchair users when going outside. It aims to foster empathy, inspire action, and advocate for improved accessibility in public spaces.
Through the combination of VR and wheelchair simulation, participants manipulate a virtual wheelchair with their hands, authentically experiencing the obstacles faced by wheelchair users. This innovative format expands the boundaries of virtual exploration, providing a seamless way to navigate and explore the virtual world.
Using natural controls, participants roll the virtual wheelchair's wheels to strategically navigate inaccessible pathways, winding roads, narrow doorways, and uneven terrain. Engaging experiences like wayfinding, room escape challenges, puzzle-solving, and collecting empowering props motivate continuous exploration.
In contrast to the exploration of the beautiful real world by those with full mobility, many wheelchair users stay at home due to the numerous risks and inconveniences outside. In "WheelVenture", from the unique viewpoint of a wheelchair user, participants are exploring a visually stunning environment with a sense of wonder and intrigue, which ensures an enjoyable experience while demonstrating the potential for everyone to access the world's beauty.
By promoting empathy and understanding among participants, "WheelVenture" seeks to make a lasting impact, sparking conversations, raising awareness, and ultimately improving accessibility and inclusivity for a better future.
