This cooperative office and coffee stand in Nihonbashi, Tokyo, operated by Shizen Energy Inc.which aim to100% renewable energy society, exemplifies the company’s commitment to sustainability and harmony with nature. The space is designed to provide a flexible environment where people can collaborate, work, cook, and hold lectures, all while connecting with the natural world.

Designed with the concept of "Entrance to the Blue Planet," it connects people's consciousness to nature. The slightly sunken floor from the ground level symbolizes the "underground," representing the living soil hidden beneath Tokyo's layers of concrete. This idea highlights that even in a highly urbanized area, life exists just beneath the surface. To convey this, the design uses up-cycled tiles, showcasing their uncolored, raw backsides, which reveal the material's baked soil origins. This approach not only emphasizes the connection to nature but also tackles the issue of waste, repurposing tons of tiles that are typically discarded every day.

Above ground, the design continues to draw inspiration from nature. Cedar boards are arranged in a louvered structure, creating an abstract representation of trees. This design element serves to remind visitors of the forests that once covered the land and the ongoing relationship between human environments and the natural world. Additionally, gradations on the walls mirror the depth and tones of the sky and atmosphere, adding a sense of openness and connection to the broader environment.

The space is not just a functional area for work and collaboration but also a thoughtful commentary on sustainability and the invisible ties between the city and nature. By integrating natural materials and textures, and by reimagining waste into design, the space fosters a deeper appreciation for the planet's resources. Through these thoughtful design choices, this co-working space offers a unique opportunity to reflect on how urban life can harmonize with the Earth's ecosystems, inspiring visitors to consider their role in creating a more sustainable future.
