This Kappo restaurant perfectly integrates tradition and modernity, creating a serene, elegant dining environment infused with unique Eastern charm.
Located near the Kamo River in Kyoto, the restaurant, taking into account local customs and culture, prioritizes privacy of guests. Its facade follows the style of a machiya, seamlessly blending into quaint streets of Kyoto. The ingeniously arranged walls and fences bring a rich play of light and shadow, resulting in a soft, dim outline of the building; the slightly elevated entrance clearly separates indoor and outdoor spaces to give a feeling of alienation, suggesting that the restaurant will transport guests to a world isolated from the hustle and bustle of everyday life.
The counter area, as the core of the restaurant, evokes a sense of ceremony by incorporating orderly elements: the umbrella-like ceiling echoes the symmetrical, radial counter, leading to a solemn atmosphere. Meanwhile, the wall adorned with paintings of cranes and clouds adds an elegant, leisurely touch, which, when complemented by smooth movements of chefs, offers guests a unique dining experience through the interplay of stillness and motion.
The area mainly utilizes exquisite hinoki cypress, whose soft hue and pleasant aroma contribute to a cozy and relaxing environment. Moreover, the application of low-saturation natural colors and traditional Eastern materials highlights unique Eastern charm while embracing the simplicity and comfort of modern design.
