Aperture, in geology, is the word assigned to the space between two spices of fractured rock.

Aperture is an immersive, temporary, art-chitecture that invites the audience to push the boundaries of their spatial understanding through the exploration of negative space and intersecting geometries.

Conceptually, the art-chitecture was driven through inspiration from our home state of New South Wales, Australia.

NSW is home to countless beautiful and unrivalled natural wonders. Jenolan Caves, Australia Rock at Narooma Beach, Figure Eight pools in the Royal National Park and of course, The Three Sisters in the Blue Mountains are just a few of the natural wonders that have driven the exploration of APERTURE.

Sculpted and shaped by the wind and the waves, each of these formations display natural geometries and natural apertures, framing the natural environment around them and drawing visitors from across the country and abroad.

Atelier Sisu has adapted these water and wind eroded formations into a focused exploration of framed openings, simplifying the geometries and curating a spatial experience for the audience.

The audience is invited to explore the spatial network created through a labyrinth of sculpted and perforated wall forms. Internally illuminated, the audience can explore carefully framed openings, and peepholes. Through this invitation, the audience is tacitly learning and forming their personal understanding of spatial awareness.

Atelier Sisu places an emphasis on a transitional day to night presence, allowing the artwork to be visually engaging during all hours. A carefully curated lighting show illuminates the intersecting, geometric walls that form the artwork during the evenings. During the day, the white canvas is accented through colourful framing to highlight each of the perforations and openings.

Accompanying the physical artwork is a specifically composed soundscape created by Joseph Burgess (Unregistered Master Builder).
