The Vessel Type is a climate-responsive architectural typology developed for the western region of Madagascar, where communities face extreme seasonal shifts between flooding and drought. Designed to meet urgent environmental and social needs, the typology combines infrastructure and public space, offering both practical water management and meaningful communal engagement.
At its core, the structure captures, filters, and stores rainwater. During the wet season, it collects surface runoff and channels it through a filtration system composed of sand, gravel, and local materials, providing clean water for domestic use and irrigation. This stored water becomes an essential resource during the dry season, when access to freshwater becomes scarce. The system not only ensures water security but also protects surrounding agricultural land from erosion and supports year-round farming activity.
Beyond its environmental function, The Vessel Type acts as a cultural and social anchor. The architecture includes shaded gathering areas, pathways and platforms that serve as spaces for daily interaction, festivals, markets, and educational activities. These communal spaces are integrated into the structure itself, reinforcing the connection between ecology and everyday life.
Constructed from regionally available materials and designed with local building knowledge in mind, the typology can be adapted to different terrains and expanded into a network across communities. As a scalable and replicable model, it proposes a future in which architecture participates in both environmental resilience and social equity.
The Vessel Type is not a static object, but a living system that evolves with its environment. Over time, weathering, repair and adaptation become part of its identity - reflecting the rhythms of the land and the people it serves. By merging water infrastructure, agricultural support and communal space into a single architectural gesture, The Vessel Type becomes a vessel for life itself: sustaining, connecting and growing with the community.
