Howqua River Lodge

Howqua River Lodge is a model of self-sufficient architecture and resilient design, balancing off-grid independence with high-performance living in a pristine alpine environment.



The lodge draws on the natural benefits of this particular site in the Howqua Valley within the Victorian Alps, hand-selected not just for its spectacular enveloping outlooks but also for its northern light and natural ventilation.



The three pavilions were strategically positioned to maximise thermal efficiency and minimise environmental impact through natural light and passive heating. Wide eaves shield interiors from excessive sun and rain. Construction features efficient, recycled, high-performance materials, including glazing, insulation, and appliances.



The architectural form references the mountain vernacular, embedding the lodge seamlessly into the regional landscape. Beyond the physical design, its connection to place extends through local craftsmanship and material sourcing. Nearby trades and suppliers were engaged for their expertise and commitment to quality, ensuring longevity in both construction and experience.



Within the living spaces, the landscape directly influences the material selection, prioritising durability, sustainability, and wellbeing. Locally sourced and recycled materials—including spotted gum timbers, bagged rendering and stone—ground the project in its alpine context. Outdoor spaces include a pool, spa, and sauna, all powered by solar energy.



Howqua River Lodge operates entirely off-grid, generating its own electricity through an extensive rooftop solar array. Rainwater is harvested, and wastewater is managed through a closed-loop worm farm.



The comprehensive bushfire preparation strategy incorporates automated fire detection, dedicated water storage, and a bunker. The landscape design further minimises fire risk through controlled fuel loads and native planting.
