This project explores the delicate balance between newly built residential apartments and community-oriented retail within a historical district, aiming to create a culturally rooted yet forward-looking urban neighborhood. The concept of “Connection” serves as the core design narrative—linking people, programs, and architectural expressions across time, generating a vibrant and inclusive community that bridges tradition and contemporary life.
The program is composed of three primary components: office building, local retail, and apartment housing. The overall layout responds to the urban fabric, activating the street edge and fostering a strong sense of identity and belonging.
SOUTHWEST SITE: The office and retail volumes use weathering steel and glass curtain walls as their defining materials. The deep rust tones of the steel echo the bricks of nearby historic buildings, providing a modern response to local heritage. Perforated steel panels animate the façade, casting shadows that soften the daylight and bring warmth into interior spaces.
NORTHEAST SITE: The retail massing is clad in brick, closely aligned with the materiality, grain, and human scale of the surrounding neighborhood, reinforcing a sense of continuity and context.
The apartment buildings feature board-formed concrete façades, whose raw, tactile quality contrasts with the warmth of adjacent brick materials. This contrast highlights programmatic differentiation and symbolizes how the coming residents will reinvigorate the historic site with new energy and possibilities.
Ultimately, this mixed-use complex becomes a space of everyday connection—between past and future, living and commerce, architecture and the evolving urban community.
