Located in Xizhi District, the 76 square meters new residence belongs to a young couple with two children. The couple envisioned their home not only as a shelter but as a “treasure box” to hold their children’s growing memories. The designer developed the concept of the Starry Treasure Box, inspired by the couple’s shared romantic memories and the symbolic role of a home as a vessel—capable of collecting laughter, storing books and toys, and preserving everyday warmth. The design philosophy was to use light, shadow, and softened elements to transform a limited space into a home that can grow and evolve with time.
The overall style continues the Japanese-inspired simplicity of Muji aesthetics, with white and light wood as the main palette to create a gentle and airy atmosphere. The most distinctive idea was to break convention. Instead of a traditional television wall, a retractable projection screen was installed, freeing the wall to become a large bookcase. This fulfilled the owners’ love of reading while surrounding the children with books as they grow; when the screen descends, the family enjoys movie nights together, blending functionality with emotional connection.
Another highlight is the use of curved vocabulary. Large, heavy beams were softened with arcs that extended to the sofa backdrop and curtain boxes, turning sharp edges into fluid lines and creating an open, flowing visual movement. The 65 cm low dining table also broke standard proportions, encouraging relaxed, natural interaction between children and adults, fostering warmth in daily life.
