Client's Name

ZIWAN TEA

Country / Region

China

This tea gift packaging draws inspiration from the ancient Chinese ceremonial tablet known as the Hu—a symbol historically carried by officials to court as a reminder of their duty to speak with integrity and serve the nation. Rooted in this heritage, the design reinterprets the Hu’s cultural essence of “presenting counsel with devotion, bearing national responsibility” into a modern social philosophy: “initiating trust through tea, connecting hearts with ritual.” In doing so, it imbues the product with cultural resonance and emotional significance.

The unboxing experience is thoughtfully choreographed into a three-stage ritual: Unfolding—Reading—Savoring, transforming everyday tea preparation into a moment of cultural immersion. The outer box echoes the form of a traditional imperial memorial (Zouzhe), designed to unfold horizontally like an official document presented to the emperor, while its inner side features handwritten calligraphy that merges cursive script with memorial-style typography, presenting the brand’s manifesto. This design invites consumers into an immersive cultural dialogue between the past and the present. Inside, the tea pouch abstracts the shape of the Hu into a refined, 20cm elongated silhouette, mirroring the distinctive strip-like form of Wuyi rock tea leaves while establishing a strong, recognizable product identity. The signature mark “Zi Wan” is rendered over a ripple-patterned background, symbolizing the enduring fragrance and lingering aftertaste of fine tea. This visual element also reinforces the brand’s ethos of honoring tradition while innovating for today.

Color choices play a pivotal role in conveying meaning. The exterior showcases Vermilion Gold to evoke nobility, enriched with textured patterns inspired by the natural rock formations of Wuyi’s Danxia landscape, enhancing tactile and visual depth. The brand’s signature Elegant Purple is integrated with fluid curves, alluding to the withering stage in tea processing while adding a touch of modern refinement. The inner packaging adopts a pristine Hu-inspired Ivory White, symbolizing purity and solemnity, aligning with the philosophical ideal of harmony between heaven, earth, humanity, and tea.

Committed to sustainability, the packaging uses FSC-certified paperboard and plant-based inks, ensuring environmental responsibility without sacrificing quality. This holistic design achieves a harmonious balance between ceremonial dignity, cultural reverence, and ecological mindfulness.
