Saline Dreams reimagines Owens Lake in California’s Owens Valley—a site once filled with freshwater and life, later desiccated by the early 20th-century Los Angeles Aqueduct diversion—as a landscape of coexistence between humans and an extreme ecology. Following decades of dust pollution and ecological loss, ongoing restoration has given rise to a mosaic of shallow brine pools, salt crusts, and wetland habitats that now host migratory birds and microbial communities. Within this evolving terrain, Saline Dreams envisions a performative landscape that makes the invisible processes of saline ecology visible, experiential, and educational.

The design unfolds through a gradient of brine environments, from the reflective northern reservoirs to the painterly central fields and the gridded southern salt pans. Visitors traverse the site through walkways, field stations, and observation decks that merge with the terrain, while drones extend perception beyond the human scale—revealing chromatic transformations and environmental dynamics over time.

Architecture and landscape operate as ecological instruments—collecting, filtering, and supporting the saline life cycle. The project reframes Owens Lake from a history of extraction and remediation to one of renewal, perception, and awareness.

By merging technology, ecology, and aesthetics, Saline Dreams offers an innovative model for designing with, rather than against, extreme environments. It transforms adversity into beauty and fragility into resilience, inviting visitors to witness the delicate balance that defines the coexistence of humans and the Earth’s elemental landscapes.
