About The Entry

The core design concept of this project originates from the translation and spatialization practice of the musical concept of “polyphony.” Moving beyond simple stylistic collage, it aims to use the cultural spirits of two international metropolises, Shanghai and Milan, as independent “voices.” Through spatial “intertextuality” and “counterpoint,” it composes a harmony about contemporary urban life. This is not a compromise of fusion, but an active “re-creation of international urban culture,” seeking to explore how individuals, within the context of globalization, can find internal order and spiritual dwelling amidst interwoven cultural space.

The design narrative unfolds along the axes of color and time. We employ dark as the leitmotif, deconstructing it into four emotional tones: light dark, rich dark, dull dark and deep dark. These correspond respectively to the natural rhythms of dawn, day, dusk, and night. Like different themes in a musical movement, these four hues intertwine and vary within the space, jointly build a sensory experience that transcends culture and time. In the Dining Area, the design forms a restrained counterpoint with dark-colored dining chairs and gray granite. The circular dining table and vertical lighting fixture constitute the spatial axis, symbolizing gathering and order. The study and lounge areas play the role of the “bass voice” in the polyphony. Through the juxtaposition of a deep dark-colored sofa, a striped bench, an antique armchair, and a geometric-pattern rug, they facilitate a dialogue between the rhythm representing modern rationality and notes reflecting historical depth, enriching the spatial layers through tacit correspondence and mutual reflection.

All objects and furnishings within the space are no longer mere decorations but become “heterogeneous objects”carry cultural information. Paintings on ceramic jars, silver tea sets, round tables crafted with acid-etching techniques, and objects made of composite material, like pewter and bronze together constitute a microcosmic cultural field. The bedroom, with its symmetrical layout, embraces all phenomena, transforms the entire space into a self-consistent, poetic, and serene living entity. This fits the project’s initial philosophical inquiry into cultural polyphony and spiritual balance.
