Junwei Zhou · Proof of Existence Birthday Concert is an experimental stage design that redefines a concert from a celebratory performance into an immersive narrative environment. Rejecting the traditional one-directional output of entertainment, the project uses the milestone of “turning thirty” as a dramaturgical catalyst to construct a complete spatial storyline addressing memory, identity, collapse, and renewal. Rather than presenting fragmented songs and interactions, the concert unfolds as a continuous psychological drama, transforming the stage into a “spiritual container” for shared emotional reflection.
The scenographic core focuses on translating abstract psychological states into a tangible mechanical language. The main stage features a serrated projection wall capable of opening and closing, combined with a six-meter-wide rear light wall and a 360-degree mechanical turntable. Through deliberate spatial compression and release, the visual narrative progresses through three stages—Sacredness, Collapse, and Reshaping—mirroring the inner emotional transitions of the performer and audience.
A major innovation is the extended stage design. Abandoning the conventional integrated catwalk, the project introduces a “Floating Island” concept. This physically disconnected structure consists of an outer water stage and an inner circular platform surfaced with simulated green algae carpet, symbolizing individual isolation and persistence within the passage of time. A custom luminous mobile cart and a CNC light box matrix bridge the main stage and the island. These elements rise and fall in response to voice-over narration and musical intensity, dynamically altering perceived distance and fostering emotional convergence between artist and audience.
The project further expands immersion by introducing an olfactory narrative. A bespoke “scent script” accompanies the emotional arc of the performance, shifting from light floral notes at the beginning to grounded woody tones at the finale. By activating olfactory memory, the design leaves a lasting multisensory imprint of presence and existence.
Ultimately, this project functions as a gentle yet powerful social-psychological experiment. By deconstructing Junwei Zhou’s roles—as singer, narrator, and past self—the design visually articulates the fluidity of identity. The audience becomes active witnesses rather than passive viewers, collectively affirming a shared question: What is the proof of one’s existence?
