Located in Taichung, where modern urban development coexists with a slower pace of life, this project translates the city’s dual character into spatial language. A clear and rational spatial order responds to the contemporary urban context, while refined materials and layered lighting shape a calm and understated atmosphere. Between movement and stillness, as well as fast and slow rhythms, the design creates a home for a physician couple, allowing them to transition smoothly between different states of living.
In this open layout, the design is guided by a layering of materials and the interplay of solid and void. Warm wood, stone textures, and soft grey tones establish a refined and tranquil atmosphere, while geometric precision and rhythmic proportions articulate depth and visual cohesion. Light, in its many forms, permeates the space—defining boundaries, shaping mood, and relieving the compression of corridors—ultimately lending the interior a quiet, poetic quality.
Addressing the limitations of the original kitchen storage, the design introduces an integrated appliance unit as a pivotal spatial hinge. Curvilinear forms are carried throughout the space, fluidly linking the entryway, kitchen, and TV feature wall while softening the massing. Within this flowing rhythm, circulation and sightlines are carefully orchestrated, naturally guiding the gaze toward the open window view.
Departing from the conventional approach of concealing storage, the design wraps the volume in warm wood veneer and pairs it with lightweight folding glass doors. Through an asymmetrical composition and precisely staggered black-framed lines, the functional mass is redefined as a sculptural focal point, transforming it into a defining spatial feature.
