As urban spaces become increasingly compressed, even small-scale residences can serve as creative arenas, expressing design language and embodying a lived sensibility. This micro-residence in New Taipei City uses bold stylistic choices and densely layered details to define a personalised way of urban living unique to its owner.
Given the homeowner's distinctive taste in interior aesthetics, the design team reconfigured the original layout from the very beginning. By removing the secondary bedroom’s partition, they created a window-side daybed area, opening up previously blocked living room sightlines and bringing in exterior views. This change also expanded the perceived spatial volume of the once-cramped interior. To accommodate occasional overnight guests, the daybed area was designed with flexibility in mind: two motorized curtains and a pull-out cushion drawer allow the space to transform seamlessly into a private guest room.
The interior space came with structural constraints. One particularly low beam, just 210 cm above the floor and positioned over the TV wall, could have made the room feel oppressive. Instead of concealing it in the conventional way, the designers chose to clad it in mirrored surfaces, effectively softening its visual weight and dissolving the sense of spatial confinement. Another beam was deliberately enlarged and transformed into a glowing lightbox, becoming the central visual element of the room. With its outward-casting glow, it not only reduces the perceived pressure of the structure but also injects a futuristic, sci-fi ambiance, guiding the imagination toward the space’s potential futures.
