The Suwen Qin takes its name from the idea of “inquiring into authenticity”—a principle that shapes both its cultural spirit and its design philosophy. It is conceived not merely as an instrument, but as a medium for dialogue between the player and the inner self. Faithfully modeled on the Tang dynasty qin preserved at Horyuji Temple, the instrument honors its predecessor’s refined presence while addressing the practical demands of contemporary use through systematic innovation, striking a balance between ancient heritage and modern functionality.
The design traces its lineage from its Tang dynasty predecessor, embracing the classic proportions of clean horizontal and vertical lines with gently rounded contours. The result is a presence that feels both grounded and ethereal. Adapted for modern dynamic lifestyles, its dimensions have been precisely calibrated to fit easily in a car trunk, freeing the qin to move beyond a single location and become a part of life. Beyond size, the internal chamber is shaped through precision acoustic engineering, ensuring that, even in its compact form, the instrument delivers the rich tone and full resonance expected of a professional-grade qin.
The lacquer craftsmanship and detailing reflect both innovation and human-centered design. A distinctive matte-textured lacquer finish lends the instrument a quiet, elegant identity—understated yet unmistakable. Beyond aesthetics, it creates a naturally anti-slip surface that significantly improves fluidity across the strings, effectively addressing common performance issues such as unwanted noise and stickiness caused by perspiration. Further refinements, such as a widened string anchor at the tail and optimized body proportions, enhance overall playing comfort and control.
This is more than a refined instrument; it is a space for inwardness. By harmonizing the touch, tone, and form, it invites the player into a quiet dialogue with the inner self, bridging the spiritual depth of tradition and the rhythms of modern life.
