Electrical fires frequently originate at the most overlooked point in domestic infrastructure: the plug and socket interface. While circuit breakers and regulations protect the wider system, the physical connection itself remains vulnerable to overheating, loose contacts, and electrical arcing.

PlugShield introduces a new layer of passive fire mitigation directly at this ignition point.

Designed as a universal sleeve compatible with standard plugs and extension leads, PlugShield integrates intumescent technology within a compact, unobtrusive form. Under normal conditions, it functions as a discreet protective layer. When exposed to abnormal heat, the material expands to form a dense insulating char, helping to contain flame spread and reduce oxygen access at the source.

The design challenge was to create meaningful fire protection without altering user behaviour, requiring maintenance, or interfering with everyday functionality. Through iterative prototyping and material calibration, the final geometry balances close thermal proximity to high-risk contact zones with structural stability and universal fit.

Its fastening system enables tool-free retrofitting, making protection accessible in homes, rental properties, offices, and commercial environments. Unlike electronic detection systems, PlugShield operates continuously and silently. There are no sensors, batteries, or active components—only material intelligence responding when needed.

By reframing the plug interface as a critical safety opportunity rather than a fixed component, PlugShield embeds resilience into existing infrastructure.

PlugShield transforms an overlooked vulnerability into a designed layer of protection—redefining where fire safety begins.
