The project redefines the kitchen island as a luminous spatial object rather than a conventional piece of furniture.
Instead of relying on surface textures or applied materials, the design explores light as a primary medium. The island is formed from translucent acrylic, allowing illumination to pass through and be distributed within its volume. As a result, the object does not simply reflect light — it absorbs, diffuses, and emits it, creating a sense of depth that exceeds its physical boundaries.
The organic geometry of the island is inspired by natural erosion processes. Smooth, dune-like formations are not decorative elements but structural features that control the behavior of light. Each curvature alters the intensity and direction of illumination, generating gradients and soft transitions that continuously change depending on the viewing angle and ambient conditions.
A secondary layer is introduced through the base structure, which functions as a visual “root system.” This lightweight, biomorphic framework lifts the volume from the ground, enhancing the perception of levitation and amplifying the glow through reflection and shadow interplay.
The contrast between the dense, tactile countertop and the translucent body reinforces the duality of material and immaterial presence. The island appears simultaneously solid and ephemeral, challenging the traditional perception of kitchen elements as static and purely functional.
By shifting the focus from materiality to light behavior, the project transforms the kitchen into an atmospheric environment. The object evolves throughout the day, becoming more expressive in low-light conditions, where its internal structure is fully revealed.
This approach positions the kitchen not as a collection of components, but as an experiential system shaped by interaction between form, light, and space.
