Guided by the philosophy of “Sports Return to Life,” the Hangzhou Asian Games Museum—the world’s first museum planned and designed before the event—stands as a significant witness to the city’s contribution to Asian sports and a vital bridge fostering a deep link to the Olympic Council of Asia.
The museum, centered on the value system of “Sports originate from life, flourish in competition, and return to life,” narrates the story of the Asian Games through three themed exhibition sections including “Asian Games and Hangzhou,” “Asian Games and Asia,” and “Asian Games and the Future.” It not only traces Hangzhou’s journey from bidding to preparation and eventual hosting with the thread of “Dreams,” but also features an exhibition dedicated to the Hangzhou Asian Para Games under the theme of “Shared Dreams,” showcasing the city’s innovative vitality. Moreover, it explores the development of Asian sports culture and incorporates the concept of an “Asian Community of Shared Destiny,” conveying the spirits and values of mutual respect and equality.
Boasting what is arguably the most comprehensive exhibit collection system globally, the museum houses over 10,000 exhibits, including torches, gold medals, and official reports from all past Asian Games. Simultaneously, it employs diverse interactive designs, making the spirit of sports tangible. Positioned at the heart of the exhibition space, a model of the Hangzhou Asian Games opening ceremony’s ignition device and torch invites visitors to interact and relive the spectacular moment. Above the exhibition hall, the OCA Members Flags, meticulously woven from Hangzhou silk, hang in neat rows, cleverly blending local heritage with sports culture. The “Asian Games and Asia” section utilizes concentric circles as its spatial language, centrally displaying symbolic gifts from Asian countries to Hangzhou, painting a beautiful picture of a thriving Asian sports community. Additionally, technological means such as AR competitions, crossscreen interactions, and immersive exhibition spaces allow visitors to experience the profound charm of sports through engaging activities.
