Situated in the core of Beijing’s Optoelectronics Hub, the project redefines the typical laboratory environment, moving beyond cold, single-use spaces to create a “New Productivity” hub where precision research meets open collaboration. By translating the industry’s innovative DNA into design, it provides R&D teams with a focused, human-centered environment that fosters both efficiency and belonging.
Inspired by the behavior of light—how it bends, splits, and filters—the guiding philosophy, “Guided by Light, Core of Innovation,” translates optical logic into spatial order. Clean lines direct circulation, while transparent partitions and soft-reflecting materials act like optical filters, balancing visual openness with physical privacy and creating a pure, ritualistic atmosphere.
Smart zoning divides the space into “Deep Space” areas for concentrated work and “Photon Cones” for chance encounters, precisely matching spatial conditions to cognitive needs. Lighting is designed to support both performance and wellbeing, with pre-set shifts that maintain lab-grade precision while keeping occupants comfortable and alert. Material choices contrast a cool industrial backbone with warm textures, achieving harmony between technical rigor and human touch.
A major challenge was maintaining bright, dynamic public areas without disturbing sensitive lab experiments. This was addressed through optical buffer zones: labs use absolute matte black finishes and recessed lighting to prevent stray reflections, while transition areas employ soft, indirect glow. Smart glass switches between clear and frosted as needed, and hidden vibration-damping layers beneath floors ensure equipment stability without compromising comfort.
Sustainability is integral to the design. Smart circadian lighting automatically adjusts with daylight, reducing energy use by over 35%, while low-carbon materials—including recycled terrazzo, straw-based panels, and zero-formaldehyde additives—minimize embodied carbon from the source. The result is a human-focused, highly functional research environment that harmonizes innovation, comfort, and environmental responsibility.
