Since its inception, the Xuzhou Confucian Temple has served as a sacred site of official learning and a material embodiment of Confucian culture, witnessing the continuation of Pengcheng’s millennia-old literary tradition. Under the theme of urban renewal and historical environment reconstruction, this design aims to explore a path from “hall” to “street.” We have never treated it as an isolated historical building to be statically preserved, but rather adopted a strategy of overlapping and symbiotic development, using the historical fabric as the foundation of spatial narrative. While preserving the original Dacheng Gate and Dacheng Hall, the block features newly constructed classical architectural complexes such as the Drum Tower and the Sutra Repository, complemented by a modern commercial area, creating a harmonious blend of ancient and modern. This transforms the renovated Confucian Temple not only into a commemorative space for history and culture, but also into an oriental cultural block capable of supporting contemporary life and stimulating community vitality, allowing cultural heritage protection and urban public life to resonate in unison. This project expresses profound culture in a contemporary way, achieving a cross-temporal fusion of Chu and Han styles with international fashion, and revitalizing Xuzhou’s commercial power through a new model, providing new choices for a high-quality urban lifestyle. As a new cultural landmark in Pengcheng that blends ancient charm with modern style, WENMIAO DONGFANG has become an important window for showcasing Chinese civilization and the features of Xuzhou to the world.

The project seeks a balance between preservation and development that is relevant to the present. WENMIAO DONGFANG allows culture and commerce to coexist under the same roof, where the sounds of reading aloud a century ago and the aroma of coffee today greet each other. When young people step into trendy shops on ancient bricks and stones, and when citizens watch an open-air performance on the wooden steps, tradition is no longer an object of admiration, but life itself that can be touched and continued to be written.
