The National Archives is Taiwan’s first national institution dedicated to preserving original historical records, while also serving as a platform for education, public engagement, and academic research. As a civic and cultural landmark, the project repositions the archive as an open interface between history and society.
The design responds sensitively to its context by retaining the site’s original ecology and shaping a “building within the forest.” Architecture and landscape are seamlessly integrated, allowing the structure to coexist with its natural surroundings. The façade draws inspiration from the red soil strata of the Linkou Plateau, expressed through a warm tonal language that evokes the layering and accumulation of history.
Subtle artistic interventions are integrated into the spatial experience. An atmospheric installation along the outdoor ramp evokes a landscape emerging from mist, while a large-scale mirrored surface is positioned along the second-floor staircase. These elements quietly reinforce the dialogue between present perception and historical reflection.
Through the integration of architecture, landscape, and art installations, the project creates an immersive environment that connects individual experience with collective memory, positioning the National Archives as both a repository of history and a living cultural landscape.
