“A self-sustaining micro ecological island for climate research, botanical study, and public environmental education.”
Governors Island Conservatory and Climate Center reimagine the legacy of the conservatory as a climate-adaptive public destination for research, education, and environmental engagement. Located on the eastern edge of Governors Island in New York Harbor, the project proposes a new type of transparent architectural system that functions not only as a cultural conservatory, but also as a living climate laboratory.
In response to rising temperatures, severe weather events, and sea-level change, the design transforms the conservatory into a fully living and breathing environmental machine. Climate-adaptive transparent structures passively regulate indoor conditions while supporting botanical research, weather-sensitive plant collections, and immersive public experiences. The center combines exhibition spaces, research environments, retreat facilities, and gathering spaces for workshops and conferences focused on climate change and botanic life.
Accessible by boat and ferry, the project establishes a resilient island edge and tests new architectural possibilities at the water’s edge. Through its integration of ecological infrastructure, plant research, public programming, and climate-responsive design, the proposal positions Governors Island as a landmark destination for environmental learning and future resilience.
