This project transforms a long-unused urban plot in Bridgeport’s South End, Connecticut into a multifunctional community space that combines architecture, landscape, and public plazas. Guided by the idea of “uncertain density,” it dissolves the conventional boundaries between architecture and landscape by reshaping natural topography.
A continuous, undulating artificial landscape seamlessly connects the rooftop space, sunken plaza, and semi-outdoor area, allowing the space to adapt naturally to different climates. Its non-linear, three-dimensional circulation invites people to wander and explore, giving people the freedom to choose busy, social areas or quiet, secluded corners. The functional layout strategically responds to the topography: the sports court is set underground with an earthen cover for natural sound insulation, office and leisure spaces are arranged indoors, and the open ground-level plaza serves as a hub for social activities.
Rough concrete, and transparent glass curtain walls complement each other while the earthy tones allow the space to blend seamlessly into its surroundings. The landscape system incorporates underground stormwater retention to help manage urban flooding. Through thoughtful spatial design and sustainable strategies, this project sets an example for urban micro-renewal, offering a multifunctional activity space for people of different backgrounds.
