K-Dessert l Packaging the Story of Korean Life Through Rice Cakes
TTEOKIDANG is a storytelling-based K-dessert packaging project that reinterprets Korean rice cake culture through contemporary visual experience and emotional narrative.
In Korean culture, rice cakes have historically been shared during meaningful life events such as a child’s first birthday, weddings, and longevity celebrations.
Rather than functioning solely as food, rice cakes symbolized blessing, connection, respect, and shared emotion.
This project transforms those cultural meanings into an experiential packaging system designed for global audiences.
The exterior structure is inspired by traditional Korean architecture, including Hanok houses and Gyeonghoeru Pavilion, reinterpreted through a modern graphic language emphasizing balance, simplicity, and spatial harmony.
The interior uses a layered pop-up structure that unfolds scenes from Korean ceremonial culture, allowing users to experience the package as a small narrative stage rather than a conventional food container.
The design intentionally shifts the role of packaging from “product protection” to “cultural storytelling.”
A key strategy of the project was making Korean tradition emotionally accessible without requiring prior cultural knowledge.
Instead of explaining history through text, the package communicates through universally recognizable human moments — celebration, family, memory, and connection.
Additionally, the package system was designed with scalability and sustainability in mind.
The external structure remains standardized while internal storytelling layers can be replaced, enabling efficient production and future cultural series expansion.
TTEOKIDANG ultimately proposes a new direction for K-dessert branding:
not simply exporting Korean food, but translating Korean cultural emotion into a globally understandable experience.
