Woodalls designed and delivered Trainline’s new London headquarters at the Stonecutter Building, creating a workplace that reflects the company’s position as Europe’s leading independent rail and coach travel platform while supporting the evolving needs of a fast growing technology business.
The 60,000 sq ft workplace spans three floors and accommodates 689 employees within a highly flexible environment designed to support collaboration, focused work, learning and large scale social interaction. Delivered through a fully integrated Cat A and Cat B approach, the project aligns architecture, workplace strategy and interior design to create a cohesive and future focused commercial environment.
The concept was developed as a contemporary interpretation of the rail journey, shaping moments of movement, connection and pause throughout the workplace experience. Arrival is defined by an immersive tunnel inspired entrance sequence, while curved architectural forms reference railway tunnels and station structures in subtle and refined ways. A departure board inspired feature and reception desk with train influenced geometry reinforce Trainline’s identity without becoming overtly thematic.
The design balances hospitality inspired interiors with high performing workplace functionality. Rich blues, oxblood burgundies and deep greens create a warm and atmospheric palette that moves away from conventional corporate office aesthetics. At the centre of the workplace, the Central Café draws inspiration from vintage railway carriages through dark walnut joinery, brass detailing and Victorian influenced tiling, creating a social destination that encourages interaction and community throughout the day.
A broad range of work settings support different modes of activity, including open plan workspaces, collaboration hubs, quiet focus zones, meeting suites and a highly adaptable event space capable of hosting up to 425 employees. Technology integration, acoustic performance and ergonomic comfort were embedded throughout to support hybrid working and employee wellbeing.
Sustainability and inclusivity were key drivers across the project. Approximately 40 percent of existing furniture was retained and refurbished, while low VOC finishes, recycled materials and energy efficient lighting systems were incorporated throughout. Dedicated wellbeing spaces include a sensory room, multi faith room, parent room and accessible facilities.
The result is a commercially successful workplace that combines strong brand identity, operational performance and human centred design within a distinctive and highly adaptable environment.
