For the Merina people of Madagascar, death signifies continuity rather than separation. This belief is manifested in Famadihana ("the turning of the bones"), a joyful ritual in Arivonimamo where families exhume ancestral remains, wrap them in new silk ceremonial cloths (lamba), and celebrate their enduring presence. The event requires years of planning and collective savings, culminating in a communal zebu feast and a lively procession from the town center to the ancestral tomb. At the burial site, surrounded by temporary markets, the remains are carried with music and dancing, placed on woven raffia mats, wrapped in fresh lamba, and respectfully returned to the tomb.

Grounded in this rich material culture, the project introduces a portable, adaptable structural system designed to support both daily routines and the spatial demands of Famadihana. Utilizing low-tech, locally sourced building techniques, the architecture combines an interwoven bamboo frame, raffia wall panels, and a lightweight textile roof over a permanent foundation. The movable upper structure allows components to be easily transported to the graveyard during ceremonies and returned to town for daily use, utilizing an open, permeable design that encourages free movement.

The structure is designed to accommodate multiple functions throughout the year, effortlessly reconfiguring to serve various community needs. It can provide a sheltered workspace for weaving and embroidering lamba textiles, operate as a market stall in the town center, or serve as a workshop for its own maintenance. During Famadihana, it functions as a temporary preparation and changing space near the tomb. By seamlessly integrating ritualistic celebration with daily economic activities, the project provides a flexible architectural framework that strengthens community bonds, local crafts, and cultural heritage.
