Yunlin's Beigang township stands as one of the most renowned representatives of Mazu (the goddess of sea) worship in Taiwan, and its rich religious culture has consequently made Beigang a significant origin of Taiwan's religious craftsmanship industry. The current divine craftsmanship exhibition not only presents Beigang's religious art but also aims to help the audience understand that religion is not only a crucial spiritual refuge for the people of Beigang but also a key factor in the success of Beigang's craft industry. The artisans who dedicate a lifetime to crafting these artistic works have also contributed to the most distinctive local culture in the Yunlin region.
The exhibition consists of two galleries. The first gallery introduces the religious art within temples, using images, tools, and materials to showcase the refined aesthetics that artisans achieve through dedication and hard work. It emphasizes the time and technical expertise required, and through these crafted pieces, it conveys people's gratitude towards the divine. The second gallery focuses on the craftsmanship and artistry during Beigang's most prominent religious event - annual Mazu pilgrimage. It highlights the selfless dedication of Beigang residents to their faith, showing that Yunlin is not only a crucial region for nurturing religious artisans in Taiwan but also continues the intangible cultural heritage through centuries-old religious traditions.
The exhibition also incorporates digital interactive experiences, allowing the audience to feel as if they are entering Beigang's temples. Through handheld devices, visitors can make wishes to the deities and receive blessings. They can also use augmented reality (AR) to become performers in the activities, immersing themselves in the lively local culture.
