A "home sweet home" is a dream for everyone as they enter their twilight years. Our project in Mei Foo, Hong Kong, involves redesigning a residence currently inhabited by a senior couple. Given that they have lived here for over a decade, it’s clear that the interior design has become outdated. We are seizing this opportunity to update the space to meet their future needs. Through open space planning and re-configuring various areas, we strive to balance the owners' evolving needs with a chic and stylish aesthetic.
As we age, more considerations in interior design emerge: the width of pathways for wheelchair accessibility, home safety, and adaptability of traffic flow to accommodate daily life. The entrance features a wide pathway adorned with nostalgic patterned tiles, creating a welcoming ritual for when the owners return home. The living room and sleeping areas also benefit from a sense of spaciousness, achieved through an open layout. We aim to align the storage system with the walls, replace the TV cabinet with a wall shelf, and position dining chairs and desks by the windows to maintain open living space and minimize trip hazards for the senior residents.
We have revamped this home for our clients, preparing them for their future living environment. We have challenged the stereotype of elderly home design, which often relies on dark color palettes and a purely functional approach. We believe that functionality and modernity can coexist harmoniously within a space.
