ALGAETOPIA represents a pioneering serious game that ventures into the realm of future societal structures, specifically those predicated on marine symbiosis. Set in the year 2060, this game serves as a tool for entities such as natural resource departments, civil affairs offices, and architectural agencies, aiming to provide insights into the potential roles of algae within the context of future gerontological societies and to explore the possibilities of human coexistence with the marine environment.

By the year 2060, the adverse effects of global warming, particularly the rise in sea levels, are projected to inundate extensive land areas, compelling a shift in human activities towards the ocean and the emergence of marine cities. Concurrently, as non-renewable energy sources become depleted, there is a paradigm shift towards diverse forms of clean energy. Algae, being the most prevalent and fundamental organisms in marine ecosystems, are poised to become the principal source of food, energy, and construction materials.

In parallel, the proliferation of an aging population due to increased life expectancy has rendered gerontological care a paramount societal issue. The evolving social fabric witnesses a significant transformation in human ideologies, with a growing inclination towards open, inclusive, and fluid models of communal living and mutual assistance. This model envisions the elderly playing multifaceted roles in community maintenance while also partaking in services provided by their peers, fostering a virtuous cycle of mutual support.

The essence of ALGAETOPIA's gameplay revolves around the concept of sustainable development, which forms the bedrock of its game mechanics. By amalgamating the game's design with the applicative and scientific facets of sociological research, it crafts an immersive player experience. Players assume the mantle of 'community builders,' employing a meticulously zoned modular system to construct algae-based mutual aid retirement communities. They simulate the unique operational dynamics of these communities under their stewardship, thereby exploring their sustainability and contributing to the research of pertinent social science issues.
