The Gathering Place: A Home for Family and Friends

The Gathering Place is a private residence in Taichung, Taiwan, designed to accommodate both intimate family living and large social gatherings. Commissioned by a family with young children and a penchant for hosting, the design brief prioritized flexibility, functionality, and a subtle sense of luxury. The resulting space seamlessly blends diverse materials, unconventional spatial arrangements, and a dynamic lighting scheme to create a warm, inviting environment that effortlessly adapts to various needs and occasions. The core concept revolves around creating a space that encourages connection and interaction while providing ample room for individual pursuits. The design challenges conventional notions of residential spaces by prioritizing the common areas, expanding them to over half the total area of the house. This expansive communal zone encompasses the living room, dining room, and a tatami room, fostering a sense of togetherness and facilitating effortless flow between activities. The Gathering Place demonstrates how a residential space can be transformed into a versatile hub for both family life and social interaction. The design successfully balances the need for both intimacy and expansiveness, creating a space that feels both grand and welcoming.
