ONE STATION, ONE TREE, ONE GARDEN

Waiting for a delayed bus under the midday summer sun is far from pleasant, and the urban heat island effect only worsens the experience—not just for human thermal comfort, but also for the wildlife living in the city.

We aim to challenge this climate issue through one of the most common urban infrastructures: the bus station. Our design goal is to transform the bus station into a platform that offers more shade, cooling, and greenery—enhancing thermal comfort for people while also providing ecological benefits for surrounding wildlife.

Following the principle of “One Station, One Tree, One Garden,” we have integrated the bus station with a green roof and a tree box. As the trees and rooftop plants grow, the tree canopy and roof can provide additional shade, while the natural process of plant evaporation helps cool the surrounding air. To further support cooling, the station is also equipped with a built-in misting system that can be activated during hot summer days.

For water supply, the station features a short-term self-sustaining design. Rainwater is collected through the green roof and stored in an underground tank, which is also connected to the existing street water main to ensure continued operation during dry seasons.

A single green bus station may not significantly impact climate change on its own, but we hope to inspire a reimagining of how bus stations can be designed. Perhaps one day, one tree can become a forest.
