The design of Adda embraces jugaad—a resourceful approach that repurposes everyday materials—paired with a spatial language informed by India’s vibrant street culture. The architecture blurs boundaries between indoor and outdoor environments, using texture, materiality, and spatial sequencing to create an immersive dining experience.
The entry sequence transitions through three backlit arches clad in vintage Indian matchbook graphics, opening to a zinc-topped bar illuminated by pendant lights made from reclaimed tin pails. Behind the bar, sharply angled COR-TEN steel columns frame wood shelving against antique mirrored glass, layering depth and reflection.
Across from the bar, dining booths on low platforms are partially enclosed by arched cane screens in slender steel frames, while overhead, rusted planters suggest a street-side canopy. A central open kitchen is framed by a curving zinc-wrapped pass-through, drawing focus to the activity within.
Opposite, large booths nest beneath a vaulted ceiling clad in oak slats over grasscloth, punctuated with blackened steel strapping. This volume creates a cocooned atmosphere within the open floor plan. Perimeter walls of rusting corrugated metal reinforce the raw, industrial palette.
At the rear, a private dining room offers a shift in tone. A backlit, patterned walnut screen defines the space, with tall-backed banquettes providing enclosure. The floor is stenciled with traditional Indian motifs, and the dark ceiling, paired with warm pendant lighting, creates an intimate, ambient setting.
Throughout, the architectural strategy integrates adaptive reuse with crafted detailing, creating a layered environment that is both grounded in context and spatially dynamic. Material choices—industrial metals, natural fibers, and warm woods—are deployed for their tactile qualities and ability to patinate over time, ensuring the interior evolves with use while retaining its distinct character
