The Church of Root draws inspiration from Madagascar’s iconic baobab tree—a natural reservoir of life that stores and filters water, shelters communities, and endures the harshest climates. Reinterpreting the baobab’s wisdom, the project transforms the idea of a church into a living organism that sustains both spirit and body.

Rooted in the rural landscape, the design merges sacred space with productive farmland. The church canopy, modeled after the baobab’s broad crown, gathers and filters rainwater through its layered structure, channeling it into irrigation basins that nourish surrounding crops. This biomimetic cycle turns architecture into an active participant in the local ecosystem—harvesting, filtering, and redistributing water much like the tree itself.

Constructed from red earth, bamboo, and thatch, the building celebrates local craft traditions while achieving bioclimatic comfort through natural ventilation and dappled daylight. The porous, textured envelope breathes with the environment, inviting sensory engagement through sound, light, and shadow.

The Church of Root stands as a biophilic sanctuary, embodying the essence of the baobab—a place of gathering, growth, and regeneration. It redefines spiritual architecture not as an object in nature but as an extension of it, where human rituals and ecological processes are intertwined in a shared cycle of care.
