The project is a joint initiative by the Chinese National Geography Camp and the Motuo County government, occupying the second floor of the Motuo Visitor Center in Tibet. Themed “Motuo Holds a World Within,” it's conceived as a comprehensive experience space where science, nature, and culture converge. Drawing on Motuo’s extraordinary natural and cultural resources, the project translates complex geographic knowledge into immersive, interactive experiences through thoughtful curation and innovative design—unfolding a journey into the mysteries of Motuo.
The design concept draws inspiration from Motuo’s identity as a “Hidden Lotus Sanctuary.” A lotus-shaped skylight introduces natural light into the space, forming a visual focal point. The exhibition space unfolds across three thematic dimensions:
Macro Level: Curved display walls illustrate nine altitudinal ecological zones, complemented by an installation of the Yarlung Tsangpo River, and a digital model of geological evolution, collectively narrating Motuo’s epic topography and ecological hierarchy.
Micro Level: Sixteen iconic species are displayed on five standalone columns, accompanied by soundscape installations, display shelves featuring ethnic motifs, and intangible cultural heritage artifacts—making biodiversity and Menba–Lhoba culture tangible and immersive.
Digital Level: High-precision terrain simulation empowered by GIS and C4D technologies, combined with AI-powered virtual costume experience, interactive mapping, and infrared imagery, extend the boundary of visitor exploration.
The project emphasizes both scientific rigor and experiential innovation. Developed in collaboration with four research institutions and thirteen experts, it incorporates 129 scientific hand-drawn illustrations, 22 sets of past-and-present comparison images, and diverse artisanal techniques. Sustainability is integrated into the spatial design through strategies such as rainwater harvesting and natural lighting, with material choices balancing local cultural expression and environmental responsibility.
More than a model for science-tourism integration, the project marks a pivotal shift for Chinese National Geography—from media storytelling to place-based experience. Through an innovative “science + cultural tourism” model and interactive, immersive design, the project reimagines regional resources into a culturally resonant destination with global visibility—setting a pioneering paradigm of spatial design for science-based cultural tourism.
