This project reimagines the workplace of Pen & Paper, a renowned Hong Kong production company whose legacy spans luxury clients, creative collaborations, and decades of cultural evolution. Located in a 1970s building in Central Hong Kong, the design concept draws directly from the architectural character and spirit of that era. The intention was to create a space that not only respects the building’s heritage, but also reflects the generational mix within the company—founded by individuals from the 70s, and now working seamlessly with teams from the 80s, 90s, and 00s.
Our design direction began with a core idea: to reinterpret the aesthetic language of the 70s through a modern lens, producing an environment that feels rooted, timeless, and relevant. The entrance, common area, and meeting rooms adopt a mid‑century foundation—warm wood tones, geometric ceiling lighting, bespoke furniture, and patterned surfaces reminiscent of the cultural textures of old Hong Kong. These elements are carefully layered to tell a story of continuity: from the city’s design history, to the building’s original character, to the creative identity of Pen & Paper.
At the heart of the space is a fully bespoke approach. Every loose piece of furniture and every lighting element was designed specifically for this project. The meeting table, crafted with a bold surface and paired with a custom ceiling grid light, becomes a focal point that communicates confidence and taste. The lighting strategy is central to the experience; soft reflections, diffused warmth, and controlled highlights create a cinematic atmosphere that echoes the production company’s visual sensibility.
To contrast and balance the mid‑century core, the open work area adopts a clean, contemporary direction—light, flexible, and collaborative. This modern space connects past and future, mirroring how Pen & Paper collaborates across generations and across industries.
Ultimately, this project expresses that Pen & Paper is more than a production company. It showcases their perspective, refinement, and creative breadth. By merging heritage, design culture, and bespoke craftsmanship, the space becomes a physical representation of their identity—bold, considered, and unmistakably Hong Kong.
