The Dissolving Corbin Building reimagines a historic landmark in Lower Manhattan as a vertical ecosystem where living, eating, and gathering dissolve into one another. Once celebrated primarily for its ornate façade, the Corbin Building is renewed as an architecture of continuity—retaining its historic skin while transforming its interior into layers of shared space. Solid walls dissolve inward to generate communal kitchens, atriums, and gardens, blurring the line between private units and the public city.
At street level, a vibrant food court extends the energy of Fulton Center into a porous atrium where residents, commuters, and visitors converge. Above, clusters of housing organize around shared kitchens and dining rooms, turning cooking into a collective ritual. Balconies unfold into Y-shaped gardens that stitch vertical neighbors together while extending food production into the city fabric. A rooftop bar crowns the project, framing views of downtown as a communal stage for cultural exchange.
More than housing or retail, the project reframes food as cultural infrastructure: a universal language that fosters empathy across boundaries of class, origin, and belief. Against a backdrop of global fragmentation and retreating cosmopolitanism, the design proposes architecture as a catalyst for unity, using rituals of nourishment to connect the domestic with the civic, the historic with the contemporary, and the individual with the collective.
