The design of Dongpingchao Restaurant combines the romance and elegance of French architecture with the hustle and bustle of daily life on the one hand, and connects life with culture to show attitude of pleasant way of living. Above all, the principles of food could reflect the development and history to some extent.

The western-style houses hold high position in the history. In this connection, the designer adheres to the reconstruction concept of “simplicity over complexity”, conforms to the original architectural texture, and inherits the established structure of the western-style house to highlight the humanistic value of the original wall decorations, windows, and wooden sloping roof structure of the western-style house with light tone and less brushstroke expression, realizing a dialogue between historical culture and spatial scenes.

The restaurant suggests the idea of “learning from the tide,” meticulously merging historical patterns with taste of food to inspire an indefinite aftertaste. This idea is based on Mr. Zhang’s “Boiling the Sea” theory and Mr. Yu’s “New Chinese Cuisine” philosophy.

Inspired by this, the design team aim for “rejuvenation of the old” in order to express peoples’ desires and combine the essence of design in this regard. The exterior of the home maintains as much of its original western-style as possible, while the interior emphasizes the romantic feelings concealed in French design, compatible with the exquisite craftsmanship of Jiangnan artifacts. In this way, they merge into the symbiosis and prosperity of art and culture, interweaving the particular delicateness and elegance of Shanghai with the originality of European architecture.

Eight quiet and magnificent private dining rooms are created by the designer from the original private residence base. The western-style home hall’s depth increases the serenity of the dining area, and the bony posture of the brick and wood structure also gives the area a dynamic and enigmatic feeling. Ingenious and innovative cuisine highlights the beauty and the uniqueness of seafood, making it an eye-catching delicacy, being the visual center of the dining table in the restaurant’s traditional deep tones and faint lighting.
