This apartment is situated in in Shanghai's Old West Gate, fragment of the historic Shanghai's Old City Hall. During the foreign concession era of heavy colonial influence, the Old City Hall remained an enclave of authentic Chinese culture and lifestyle.Though urban renewal has reshaped much of the historic site, its rich heritage has inspired us to rethink how contemporary design can can enhance the quality of life of the modern Chinese family while resonating with its cultural heritage. While contemporary design reflects our dynamic culture, from art to digital media, its essence often gets lost in chasing fleeting trends. Our approach balances innovation with classical and modernist principles, prioritizing timeless spatial qualities and human proportions. We've created a neutral canvas that bridges classical and modern elements, allowing the owner's evolving tastes to emerge naturally against an enduring backdrop. Underneath the apartment's simple yet elegant black and white look, the planning of the apartment is where we differentiate the client's project from the rest of the market. Taking inspiration from the site's historical context, we blended the modernist approach of big open space with traditional spatial quality of rich layering. For example, the foyer, with its intersecting halls, delicately balances classical spatial qualities with modern details. This space not only creates a powerful sense of arrival, but also serves as a clear boundary between the apartment's public and private areas. The main dining area was originally part of a large open space shared with the lounge/family room and living room, is now separated by two volumes to create more intimate spaces while maintaining a sense of openness and flow. While the layout was guided by a classical approach, it feels instinctive rather than rigid; the intentional planning dissolves into the subconscious, becoming second nature to daily life. In an era where design often chases the ephemeral, this apartment stands as a testament to our firm's core philosophy: delicate sense of spatial scale and proportion, as well as the harmony between classical order and modernist freedom. Here, contemporary design steps back, becoming merely a timeless backdrop allowing individual expression and continuous evolution.
