About The Entry

1984 Title Sequence

Created by Yizhou Zhou & Autumn Li

This conceptual title sequence is a visual interpretation of George Orwell’s 1984, designed to evoke the novel’s core themes of surveillance, censorship, and psychological control. The piece uses stark visuals, restrained motion, and a muted color palette to reflect the bleak and oppressive tone of the original story.

The sequence opens with a quiet but disconcerting scene: a woman drinks her morning coffee, unaware that she’s being monitored by a figure behind a glowing screen. From there, we move through a series of surreal, symbolic moments—documents being “corrected,” slogans echoing Party doctrine, and repeated imagery of watching eyes. These elements were carefully chosen to mirror the systemic rewriting of history and the loss of personal agency within the world of 1984.

A recurring visual motif throughout the sequence is the presence of eyes—embedded subtly into clocks, mirrors, and interfaces—to reinforce the constant state of being watched. The sequence concludes with a chessboard, referencing a quiet but powerful moment in the novel's final chapter, where themes of submission and psychological defeat come full circle.

Rather than summarizing the plot, our aim was to build a mood-driven interpretation that conveys the emotional atmosphere of Orwell’s dystopia. Typography, motion, and imagery are used to immerse the viewer in a world where truth is unstable and resistance is futile—even before the story begins.
